Big response to sandcastle comp ideaJULIA WADE Transforming sand into incredible works of art along a coastal canvas could possibly become a competition in Mangawhai next year. Brainchild of the idea, longtime-holiday-local-soon-to-be-resident Dennis Emsley, posted a message on Mangawhai’s social media during the lockdown to gauge community interest, and was amazed at the response. “Half a dozen people volunteered to help out straight away and it’s grown from there, so thought it would be good to have an actual meeting,” he says. “We’re looking to try and get it organised for summer next year.” Emsley says during lockdown he was ’bored out of my tree’ and with the move to Mangawhai in his mind, began thinking of the plight of local businesses. “Wondered how we could attract more visitors… the majority of people thought it was a good idea and wanted to have competition open to everyone, saying the more people coming to the town and shopping at local shops the better.” The sand sculpture will also support a local essential service with the suggestion of a gold coin donation going towards Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Surf Life Saving. A member from the club will be attending the meeting, along with a representative from Mangawhai Business Association and Kaipara District Council. “There is a lot to organise – choosing a beach, appropriate day with low tide, access, and toilets,” he says. “It is an open forum so anyone who is happy to come along is welcome.” n Mangawhai Sand Sculpture Group will holding their inaugural open forum meeting on July 11, Mangawhai Tavern at 2pm. All welcome. |
