First NRC information event outlines local and regional issuesLocal information events hosted by Northland Regional Councillor Rick Stolwerk
On Friday evening, July 27th the first of several proposed local community events was hosted at Langs Beach by Rick Stolwerk the Coastal South Councillor for Northland Regional Council. Over 60 people turned up to listen to Rick speak on the issues facing the region locally and regionally. As outlined by Rick in his introductory comments, the role of Northland Regional Council is quite diverse and has an impact on many things we do on a daily basis. Initially Rick discussed the local initiatives around dune restoration, fresh water quality, management of coastal environments and driving safely on beaches. Those present were updated on the next stages of beach restoration at both Langs Beach and Waipu Cove. Also discussed was the recent report on the red algae beach deposits that we have seen in increasing amounts over the past five years. Although inconclusive as to the direct causes of the increasing amounts of algae, the report encouraged local people and authorites to continue monitoring any recurring deposits of alge and their frequency for further invetsigation. Also discussed on a regional note were the big issues adddressed in the recently activated Northalnd Regional Council Long Term Plan: water quality, flood management and pest control. At this point Rick invited Graeme Giles to speak. Graeme Giles is the lead advocate in the wider Mangawhai and Waipu area for controlling mammalian and now weed pests. With recent inititiatives announced in the Northland Regioanl Council’s Long Term Plan, a siginificant amount of funding has been made available for community led groups to tackle the ever increasing weed and pest problem in Northland. Graeme spoke of a recent initiative to establish a weed control group to tackle weed investation in this area, which covers over 20,000 hectatres of private and reserve land. Graeme was encouraged by the interest and uptake from thios present. Please contact Rick Stolwerk on 021 823 770 or ricks@gmail.com if you have any questions on the above topics or you would like to know of any upcoming events. |
