Promising form for young local horses

thumbnail BBCup-preso-2021June19-269What a difference a year makes! Thoroughbred horse racing is back at Ruakaka this winter and the locals are greatly appreciating the opportunities to enjoy their sport and, for many, their livelihoods.

The Ruakaka-based family training business of Kenny Rae and his daughter Krystal Williams-Tuhoro have had a great start to the season with a number of winners and placed runners. Last year under the Covid-19 disruption of Auckland region travel the family had headed to Christchurch with their racing team.

Irish Girl is a potential winter star for the stable after her very dogmatic win in the One Tree Point Motel Bream Bay Sprint on June 19. A winner of three races in the South Island last spring, the locally owned mare has proven she is going to be a force over the Ruakaka winter season in the open sprint races.

The Rae racing stables are renowned for the education and training of young horses and this year looks like proving to be better than most with several two-year-olds showing impressive race or trial form. No doubt several of the team will be aiming for the Group 3 Cambridge Stud Northland Breeders Stakes on August 21 at Ruakaka.

With the birthday of all thoroughbreds being recorded as August 1 the horses aiming for this most prestigious three-year-old race are racing as two-year-olds during July.

A new entrant to the training ranks at the Ruakaka racecourse is Anthony Burton who has returned from Invercargill and is building a nice young team with the Smith family-owned thoroughbred business Bream Bay Bloodstock. A past foreman for the highly successful Logan Racing stable, Anthony spent several years down south but recently returned, and his runners’ trial form suggest there are wins just around the corner.

The recent Bream Bay businesses race meeting was enjoyed by many business staff and clients from the district. The atmosphere on the day reflected how much people are enjoying the opportunity to get out and mix and mingle. Let us hope it can continue!
