Landfill traffic concerns Kaipara mayor

BY JULIA WADE

Dome Valley landfill-327The much-publicised controversy of a massive rubbish tip destined for the lush forest of Dome Valley has Kaipara’s mayor worried about the impact on commuting constituents.

After attending a public meeting in Wellsford mid-June with more than 200 members of the community regarding the designated Waste Management (WM) landfill site, Mayor Dr Jason Smith wants to forewarn Kaipara residents of the likely traffic congestion and increased dangers along the treacherous stretch of Dome Valley’s SH1, if the project goes ahead.

“I am very concerned…  Kaipara people would be really impacted. The Waste Management proposal could mean 350-plus additional Auckland rubbish trucks daily in each direction all the way through Dome Valley.”

Since WM first announced the proposed 1000 hectare Dome Valley landfill late last year, north Rodney residents have been vocal in their outrage and concern for the areas natural environment, especially the possibility of surrounding waterways being contaminated by waste leakage.

The community are fighting to halt the development, with several public meetings, protests and petitions with one close to 12,000 signatures.

On June 15 the site received an official rahui, a requested embargo on any activity, from local iwi.

Waste Management bought the large parcel of land situated on Springhill Estate, inland between SH1 and Wayby Valley Road, in 2018 and have already applied for a resource consent with Auckland Council.

The Chinese-owned company declare the landfill will be environmentally safe and have previously hosted four public open days to share information on the project.

With a proposed access to the landfill on SH1 just a short distance before the Wayby Valley turnoff, an alternative and often-used route Mangawhai residents use to travel home, Smith says every day travel to and from Auckland especially for Mangawhai commuters, would be ‘negatively impacted’.

“The rubbish trucks will be coming to the north side of Dome Valley rather than the south side, and that will increase congestion on SH1. Any economic and social impacts from this traffic congestion are a potential problem in addition to any environmental concerns of the Hoteo River being poisoned,” he says. “Mangawhai residents may want to watch this story closely.”
