5G sparks community interest

BY JULIA WADE

15 MF-5Gmeet-416A packed room at a recent Sunday afternoon meeting demonstrated the high level of local interest in a potential new threat to people’s wellbeing and the environment – fifth generation cellular phone technology, 5G.

Over 70 people crowded into the Mangawhai Domain hall on July 28 to learn more about the proposed wireless network that telecommunication companies and governments are planning to roll out worldwide over the next few years.

Founder of Mangawhai’s new anti-5G movement, Lis Martinac – who appeared on TV One’s ‘Seven Sharp’ after initiating an online petition to stop the network rolling out in Kaipara – was joined by expert speakers including a doctor, scientist, researcher, healthcare practitioners and a lawyer who flew up from Nelson to attend.

Martinac says the meeting was about sharing information ‘with transparency, honesty and integrity’. On leading the talk the mother of three revealed startling research including confessions from the wireless industry admitting they have no safety studies on 5G and ‘do not intend to do any’, dangers of the ultra-high intensity of 5G compared to the existing 3G and 4G, Government interference in local council environment laws to ease the implementation of the technology, out of date safety guidelines telecommunication companies and governments adhere to, and the prolific erecting of cellular towers supplemented by up to 20,000 new satellites to ensure every inch of the planet is sufficiently eradiated, ‘there will be no escaping the radiation which will blanket us 24/7’, Martinac says.

“5G is uncharted territory, we don’t know the full impact of long term exposure and constant and higher frequencies are going to have on a global scale. But we should find out before it’s imposed on us and our future generations; we have a right to know,” she says. “5G isn’t being rolled out to serve us… this new technology will be a multi-billion dollar industry.”
Guest speakers included medical scientist and researcher Dr Robin Kelly who, through recorded video message, spoke about how governing bodies such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) are ‘actively ignoring repeated science which shows how humans are already affected by current levels of electromagnetic fields (EMF); local architect and health planner Christian Simon, who spoke on the impact of 5G frequency on humans emotional health; and researcher, scientist and entrepreneur Oscar Bright discussed the ethics of corporate influence over safety regulations.

Community and environmental rights lawyer, Nelson resident Sue Grey, who has been involved with anti-1080 protesters and pro-medicinal marijuana disputes, as well as an advisor to the NZ Outdoors Party, a political party who stand alone in their concerns on 5G.

Grey says New Zealand’s future is being driven by corporate interest and not by public interest.

“People have lost their voice, we’ve been told we need these technologies… but why do we need 5G? For driverless cars? Faster downloads? So someone can remotely turn on their washing machine? Do we need it for humanity, for the real things that are important to us? What kind of world do we want to live in? One dominated by technology or one where people come first, where we respect and work with nature?” she argues. “We need to stop the companies and Government and say ‘you need to ask us first!’ There are groups in a lot of areas all over the country popping up, we need to come together, get angry and make this the Government’s biggest problem.”

Grey was critical of the committee who advises the Ministry of Health on 5G, (Interagency Advisory Committee on the Health Effects of Non-ionising Fields), saying criteria for selected committee members is ‘giving the minister advice for what he wants to hear’ instead of ‘inconvenient truths’.

She also pointed out the governments hypocrisy of waiting for research to prove the safety of medicinal cannabis before making it legal but willing to roll out 5G, ‘assuming it is safe until proven dangerous’.

Jule Bright, local natural health practitioner and creator of the world’s first certified natural sunscreen, drew the meeting to a close saying alarm bells have been going off for her in regards to the technology even though she has been told by experts that there’s nothing to worry about.

“Which is bollocks… we have to wonder how Governments are getting away with this… perhaps we do need this technology but I’m all for doing the safety studies first… however not one cent has been spent on our safety, it’s unlawful and unethical,” she says. “5G is not rolled out yet though, there is a positive ending to this story if we take action… by linking arms the power is back with the people and we can have a beautiful future. New Zealand has been the first for many things, we could be the first for saying ‘no’ to 5G.”
