Mangawhai to host dementia unit breakfast fundraiser

Albie PatonAs we age, the wonders of modern medicine are able to treat and, in many cases, prolong the inevitable. But in the area of mental afflictions such as dementia, a different and special type of care is required and with a growing and aging population in the Kaipara the necessity for such a facility is increasing by the month.

The Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust (MCCT) is currently fundraising for extensions to the existing rest home with the addition of a 14 bed secure dementia unit. Within the Northland Health Board area there are only 152 secure beds available. These are all currently taken with some three or four cases referred to Auckland on a weekly basis.

The nearest existing secure facilities are at Ranburn (Waipu) to the north and Leigh to the south which is in the Waitemata Health Board area and both are at capacity.

The MCCT have so far spent over $1million on planning, consents, foundations and pouring the floor but now require a big effort from the district to assist in moving towards framing, roofing and the completion of the unit.

Much of this has been raised through The Den, a depot for used and donated goods which has run numerous auctions and garage sales over the years in support of the community and those in need.

“This is without any assistance from Lotteries Commission, Foundation North or the Provincial Growth Fund,” says Maungaturoto’s Albie Paton, who has championed many such causes within the community over many years and is bringing this one to Mangawhai with a sit-down breakfast fundraiser at Mangawhai Club on Thursday November 14.

“We are aiming initially for $100,000 in order to have framing up and roofing underway by Christmas,” says Albie. “I was thrilled at the response I got from business owners in Mangawhai last week in support of the project and with the breakfast, raffles and auction items I’m hoping it will be an entertaining and profitable venture. We never know when any one of us may need such a facility.”

 There is seating at the Club for 200 with breakfast costing $20 per ticket, available at Mangawhai Club or call Albie Paton on 0274 949 448.

Fundraiser Albie Paton is thrilled with Mangawhai support.
