Terrific weekend a traffic weekendSince Christmas, except for a couple of very wet days, the constant remark through Anniversary weekend and now Easter has been “I’ve never seen so many people, I’ve never seen so much traffic.” The simple fact is that numbers of both will only grow in time and local towns are going to have to make some serious adjustments to cope both in terms of accommodation, parking and infrastructure to promote and allow better traffic flow. Though seriously threatened by heavy rain in the days leading up to Easter, eateries and retailers did great trade and there was plenty of activity and entertainment to keep both locals and visitors occupied. Heading into Easter, from Thursday afternoon traffic built up from the Village intersection back to Black Swamp Road on several occasions. This not only included families having a weekend away but also lots of 4x4s towing fishing craft of all descriptions into town for the TimberWorld fishing comp, plus the off-roaders here to compete in the first round of the National championships. Both fixtures were held on Saturday along with the weekly market which provides its own traffic parking problems – cars parked wherever there may be even a hint of a space. Add to that a total of over 150 classic cars and 100 motorbikes that paraded at the Waipu Car Show on Sunday and not only was Easter a terrific weekend, it was also a ‘traffic’ weekend. |
