Free trapping workshop to help protect kiwi

kiwi1-897With the kiwi breeding season approaching, the survival of their chicks will depend on the effective trapping and elimination of animal predators, particularly stoats and feral cats.

Comprehensive animal pest control is carried out at Marunui Conservation where Northland brown kiwi were released between 2013 and 2015. However, as the birds have nested and expanded their territories it has become increasingly important for predator trapping to take place in a much wider area and on both sides of the Brynderwyns.

”The good news is that many people are putting their hands up to help and we want to encourage others to join in,” says John Hawley of Marunui. A free pest trapping workshop is being held in June for those just starting out and for those already active and wanting to upskill.

Last year’s workshop was oversubscribed so early registration is recommended. Two professional trappers, Todd Hamilton and Glen Coulston, will give advice and practical demonstrations on the range of traps available for stoats, ferrets, weasels, possums, feral cats and rats, how to use them safely and effectively, where to put them and what baits to use.

Ngaire Tyson, Kiwi Coast co-ordinator, and Steve Henderson, biosecurity officer from the Regional Council, will also be on hand. Peter Hunt came to a trapping workshop in 2015 and was inspired to get trapping near Langs Beach. Last year he linked with other trappers in a new group called Waipu Kiwis. “We’ve rolled up our sleeves and got trapping with the aim of assisting kiwi recovery in the Brynderwyns and wider area.

We’ve already eliminated 74 stoats. While doing that we’ve eliminated 392 other pests, mainly rats. The workshop was a huge help and we’ll be attending this one to be inspired and informed.” Working towards a pest-free goal, the Regional Council in its Long Term Plan for Northland has identified the Mangawhai/Waipu area as a ‘high value pest control area’ where it proposes to spend $200,000 annually to support and increase the good work being done.

Hunt and Hawley agree that with this assistance and by combining forces and knowledge, the future for kiwi is looking positive.

„ Workshop Sunday June 17, 1.30-4.30pm, Domain Hall, Moir Street, Mangawhai. To register attendance contact John Hawley by June 12 on 09 376 4069, 027 262 7904, or email john.hawley@xtra.co.nz.
