Collaboration, colour and creativity at workshopProminent Mangawhai artists Gayle Forster and Elena Nikolaeva will turn tutors later this month holding a workshop for all-comers at the Village Artists Gallery.
Art is an essential part of life. It’s everywhere. Whatever our creative field be it gardening, building, dancing or painting we are a creative people. This is a collaborative workshop catering for artists, non-artists and students of all abilities. Tutors will invite you to become an artist, or if you have any experience in visual arts this is an opportunity to widen your knowledge in a vast field, express your creative drive and unlock some exciting secrets through creativity. Through the mixing of paints and pigments, this workshop is all about having fun with colour – the theory, psychology, symbolism and dramatic affects it can deliver. The workshop is essentially one day but the following Saturday will involve a short follow-up class when works will be assembled and hung for a collaborative public viewing. Although Gayle and Elena come from diverse backgrounds they are both practising artists and experienced teachers bringing both formal and informal approaches to the table. “Mine is a more theoretical experience with colour,” says Gayle. “Colour is a crucial part in that it exemplifies the character of my work. It’s exciting and even sometimes frightening. The environment of Mangawhai has re-kindled my use of colour. At University my reaction to colour was intuitive, though my studies in London, then Japan gave me an understanding of a more formal approach to colour.” Elena has a more practical approach beginning with sculpture using different materials and objects which her environment provided – like driftwood or a rusty metal part from machinery in her father’s workshop. “Then I discovered colour,” she says. “Colour has shaped my life, through the University of Architecture, Design and Fine Arts in Russia, and now living in New Zealand, being a full time artist and a tutor. I am still under the spell of colour.” DETAILS What: Collaborative art workshop. When: First day, Saturday July 16, 10am–3.30pm. All work will be compiled into a collaborative collection for exhibition the following Saturday. Where: Mangawhai Artists Gallery at the Village. Fees: $30. Students $20. All materials provided. Lunch: Bring your own or support the markets. Info: enikonzealand@gmail.com or gaylepaerata@gmail.com. EXPRESSION: Elena Nikolaeva (left) and Gayle Forster aim to unlock your inner artist at their July workshop. |
