Factory supports projects with first round of funding

By Julia Wade

6 MF-Factoryfunds copy-623A popular local charity venture that turns used goods into cash and gifts it back to the community is pleased to announce the successful recipients of their inaugural funding round.

Mangawhai Community Opportunity Shop Trust (MCOST) who trades as The Factory at Mangawhai Heads, has selected nine projects from a pool of 19 applications to receive grants from the organisations Mangawhai Community Enhancement fund.

Announced on March 23, recipients will receive between 80 to 100 percent support for requested project funding.

MCOST trustee and spokesperson, Ken Rayward says it is thanks to the overwhelming community interest that a wide range of local endeavours will receive extra financial backing.

“This has all been brought about through the people of Mangawhai, by providing product donations and customer support,” he says. “The community’s input will enable progress and completion of a broad range of wonderful community initiatives, ensuring the ongoing development and enhancement of Mangawhai.”

Successful applicant proposals include recreational, educational, environmental and sporting programmes as well as community services, cultural groups and local youth development.

“The spread of different projects able to be supported in this first funding initiative for The Factory is very exciting,” Rayward says. “They will provide life-long legacies of infrastructure development, coupled with youth development programs that will encourage and reward our future generation of community leaders to ensure the ‘spirit of Mangawhai’ prevails into the distant future.”

For the strong team of 50 locals who volunteer at the Factory, the result is ‘very gratifying’ Rayward says, knowing their enthusiasm and hard work has helped such a variety of community groups reach their goals.

“With this amount of support, The Factory Opportunity Shop grant pot can only grow during the years ahead, enabling sustained and independent development funding for the betterment of our wonderful community.”
Funding goes to:

North Rodney Blue Light Ventures
Blue Light is a highly respected organisation involving over 1,300 youths per year, supported by volunteers from the police, community organisations, teachers, students and business leaders.
The Factory is committed to providing funding support to enable youths residing in the Mangawhai community to realise their dreams and personal growth aspirations. This grant will enable 20 local youths to participate in the Blue Light Venture Mangawhai fishing and seamanship three day camp plus three Mangawhai youths to attend the Blue Light national life skills course.

Te Whai Trust
The Te Whai Trust resides in the old schoolhouse building beside the Mangawhai Museum. This grant will provide funding support for emergency food packages for the less fortunate in the community plus skin cancer clinics, a Te Reo language course as well as family violence and drug abuse support systems.

Mangawhai Volunteer Fire Brigade
The grant will go towards the funding program to provide an extension for the new fire station scheduled for completion by end 2018.

Mangawhai Volunteer Lifeguard Services
Due to a massive increase in junior membership, this grant will enable the purchase of a large container to store and protect the extra equipment now required.
An integral part of the Mangawhai community, the funds will enable the surf lifesaving club to fully support their growth in junior lifesaver membership.

Mangawhai Toy Library
Associated with Mangawhai Plunket, the Toy Library provides a unique opportunity for kids to experience toys and games that may have been out of their reach. The Factory grant will enable the purchase of a new computer and special software programs which will link the organisation to the national Toy Library program for future support.

Mangawhai Community Trust
The MCT is the umbrella for a broad range of community initiatives all operating out of the community hall attached to the Mangawhai Beach School. The Factory grant will enable a major facility refurbishment that will support a broad range of activities including religious groups, gymnasium, dancing, sport, community meetings, movie nights plus a commercial kitchen.

Mangawhai Activity Zone [MAZ]
MAZ is the recreational treasure of Mangawhai for all ages. The Factory funding will enable the plans to proceed for a new 250 metre multi-purpose track, linking current and future activities together, and greatly increasing the parks usage in a safe and welcoming environment.

Mangawhai Recreational Charitable Trust
The Gum Diggers Track is a multi-purpose track that will link Molesworth and Cove Roads and will provide a safe off-road experience for cyclists, joggers, walkers, prams and wheelchairs plus kayakers due to the track trailing along the estuary. An art trail with seating along the way is also part of the tracks future.

Mangawhai Tennis Club
The Mangawhai tennis club has 120 members ranging from four to 83 years of age, and like Mangawhai is experiencing growth in its junior membership. The Factory grant will enable the completion of two all weather, night and day courts. This will give the club six courts and through its affiliation with Northern Tennis, will be eligible to hold inter district and provincial tournaments.

Toy Library secretary Heather Fuller and treasurer Libby Clews say the grant will make a huge difference: “We are totally funded by donations, it’s great to get support from our community… we really appreciate it.”
