Balcony collapse quickens tavern restoration

By Julia Wade

4 MF-Taverncollapse-467Patrons enjoying a Saturday afternoon drink at the local tavern recently had the floor swept from under them, literally, when part of an outside second storey balcony they were gathered on suddenly gave way.

Five people were said to be standing on the narrow terrace at the Mangawhai Tavern on February 10 but luckily walked away unscathed when the flooring gave way, dropping half a metre below onto the roof of the Tavern’s entrance. Attending fire crews cordoned off the entrance temporarily until inspections for repairs could be carried out. Built in 1865 it was deemed that aging timber and weather was to blame for the incident, manager of the historical tavern, Ponui Sula says.

“It was a little dramatic… the balcony’s unfortunate collapse was due to unseasonable heavy rains and 1950's choices in construction techniques,” he says. “We have been working hard to make sure we can confidently say everything is now safe and secure.”

Due to the Tavern crew’s efforts, WorkSafe NZ closed the file on the collapse the day after the incident. Kaipara District Council also granted permission for safety work to secure the building and allowing the pub to be open for trade on February 12.

Everything was taken care of by Monday Sula says. “The good news is it looks like we have done everything right. In line with the director’s wishes to bring the tavern into the future, we have the opportunity to get some beautification under way and are developing a plan, hopefully we’ll get started soon,” he says. “It sounds like an ad but there are definite silver linings in all dark clouds. Now if only those clouds could go away so we can get back to the business of summer.”

Age and weather were blamed for the terrace collapse. Management says plans are now in motion for a facelift.
