Courses and workshops planned for new artists workspaceThe new Mangawhai Art Workspace is a teaching space that provides Mangawhai artists and community with a wealth of possibilities. Previously Mangawhai Artists Inc (MAI) had the gallery to use for short workshops over the winter months while the gallery was closed, but they now have a purpose-built teaching space allowing for year-round learning opportunities. The main impact will be the introduction of art courses that run over a longer time period and allow for a deeper level of tuition, homework and practice. The first such course is underway, and is an eight week oil painting course, with tutor Wendy Leach. Wendy has a group of 11 artists learning how to paint with alkyd oils, a fast drying oil paint. “All the artists participating in my course have exhibited before but are keen to extend their knowledge and develop new skills,” says Wendy. “As well as being a painter, I really enjoy sharing my knowledge and teaching artists new skills. I find as a teacher you get back at least as much as you give. I am enjoying working with this interesting and enthusiastic group of artists.” Those on the course agreed it was stimulating, inspiring and like an oasis within the workspace. Mangawhai Artists Inc. are planning to offer a range of short and long courses in 2021. These will include drawing, painting and printmaking classes for adults. More information is available online with new opportunities being uploaded on a regular basis. “There is a difference between an art workshop and an art course. A workshop can be a half day, a day or a weekend, and is an excellent way for getting inspiration and learning a specific technique,” says Raewyn Vague, MAI learning coordinator. “We’ve been holding workshops since October and we will be offering a diverse range of workshops in 2021. In contrast, an art course provides ongoing tuition and the building of knowledge and skills made possible over a longer series of classes and these are being developed now for next year.” Elena Nikolaeva, Christine Moginie, Karen Williamson, Wendy Leach and Nicola Everett are all tutors who will be running courses in the new year, covering watercolours, pastels, theory of colour, acrylics for beginners, drawing for beginners, and printmaking. n Look out for art classes and courses at mangawhaiartists.co.nz/art-workshops.html Mangawhai Artists Inc looking for Art Trail participants The Mangawhai Artists Inc (MAI) is excited to be organising the annual Art Trail on February 27-28.
