New owners to continue Kakariki philosophy

One of Mangawhai’s most sweet-scented stores is changing hands, and a local family with a health-orientated life philosophy are stepping behind the counter.

Owner of Mangawhai Village’s independent health store Kakariki Health and Wellbeing, Ali Jacomb, is moving on to a more southern destination, selling up to local couple Anneke and Craig White, owners of Mangawhai Food Store, an online shop selling organic produce, Mediterranean goods as well as bulk and whole foods.

Anneke says Ali selling was perfect timing as, although the Whites also trade from a stall at Saturdays Mangawhai Tavern market, they had recently decided to search for a site to set up shop.

“It’s exciting… Kakariki is all the things I’ve envisaged for a shop, the match really is a dream,” she says. “Ali is amazing and she takes such good care of her customers, she knows everyone by name which is so lovely. We hope to carry on this special care.”

Retail is a new venture for the Whites. Craig was formerly involved in security installation while Anneke ‘is the creative one’ with a degree in fine arts, worked as a photographer, and home schools their five children, who range in age from five to 16. However, the stores products fit with the family life philosophy of healthy living, and say they have personal experience of many of the products while raising their family.

“We’ve used many of them through our sixteen years of having children, so we have knowledge from a parent’s perspective but there is a lot more to learn,” Anneke says. “We’ve been on work experience these last few weeks, learning the products from Ali and Nic, the herbalist and naturopath; she’s great value so it’s good she’s staying on.”

Two of the couple’s children will also be in store, with their oldest daughter helping out one day a week and 14-year-old son, who has an interest in the healing power of crystals, researching, sourcing and advising his parents on the precious stone stock range.

Officially handing over on May 10, Craig says Kakariki will not be going through any drastic changes, but with the introduction of products from their own business including organics, gluten-free products and their Mediterranean range such as olive oils, sun dried tomatoes and fermented salamis, the shop will evolve.

“We value local growers and understand how hard it can be to grow organically so we also want to support them,” he says. “Eating properly goes hand-in-hand with a health shop; we are what we eat.”

As for Ali, who first came to Mangawhai in 2007 after following ‘misguided love’, and eventually buying and creating Kakariki nine years ago into the bountiful store it is

today, she is now heading to the Kapiti Coast to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter.

‘I am sad to leave, I will miss the community and the store but plan on doing something similar in my new home. I have no doubt though that the Whites will do well, they’re a good fit… customers are in safe hands.”
