Crossing to school now saferBY JULIA WADE
After a year in the making, children of Mangawhai Beach School (MBS) can now cross the street safely during the ‘rush-hour’ commute to get to their school grounds. MBS now has a finished fenced crossing with enlarged lollipop signs to slow down and stop traffic, allowing schoolchildren and parents to cross Insley Street during the busy morning and afternoon drop-off and pick-up times. MBS principal Aaron Kemp has been working with local Kaipara district councillor Jonathan Larsen to make the school crossing safer, improvements Larsen says he has been pushing to get installed for the past year. "I had serious concerns about the safety of students getting to and from school every day on that busy road without a proper crossing," he says. "It's really great to see it completed and working well for the school and the protection of our local kids.” On June 13 a group of student road-crossing volunteers met with police constable Bernard Watt who instructed the children on how to use the new lollipops correctly.
