Boating and fishing club presents cheque to lifeguard serviceInteraction between clubs emphasises the Mangawhai community spirit.
A recent fish auction held by the Mangawhai Boating and Fishing Club (MBFC) yielded the handsome total of $1548. A cheque for that amount was presented to the Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service (MHVLS). “This is a great voluntary facility which protects our seaside community, offering opportunities to the very young to build confidence in the water, through to the senior members in competition and lifesaving skills,” says MBFC vice president Graham Bayes. “They deserve all the support we can give them.” In accepting the cheque MHVLS president Jon Drucker said the club gets no funding support other than from the goodwill of the community and fundraising events. “We have to keep up with new technology to aid us in rescues and educating swimmers and boaties,” he said. “ We have plans to purchase a new water craft and even a drone could be of assistance in identifying exactly where someone in trouble might be or the condition of a boat and its occupants that needs assistance.” The two clubs plan to run a joint radio operators course later in the year, along with seminars in conjunction with the Coastguard to inform boaties on crossing the bar, which is often attempted with little knowledge by boaties unaware of the warning signs.
