Marking Mangawhais history along the trailA series of curious standing stones have recently appeared along the main street in Mangawhai Villageand, when followed, will take an individual for a wander back in time. Established by the Mangawhai Museum volunteer history group, the heritage trail is formed by ten concrete marker slabs found between Mangawhai wharf and the domain. Each stone depicts a number marking spots of local historical interest from a bygone era including the old wharf, shops, courthouses and even ‘goo fields’. Brochures with a map and information about the buildings and activities along the trail are available from Mangawhai Museum. The history group say they are very grateful for the support they received from Mangawhai Tavern and Absolute Concrete, and extend a big ‘thank you’ also to Kaipara District Council, for advice, funding and roading contractors who lay the marker slabs. -- JULIA WADE |
