Coastal Commentary with NRC Rick StolwerkKia ora all. Firstly I just want to congratulate Chair Steve Mackay and the members of the Mangawhai Shed who are well on there way to completing their shed in the Mangawhai Domain. The group has been proactive at providing live capture cat traps for pest control throughout Northland, experimenting with a number of live trap designs, and working very closely with the predator control team at Northland Regional Council (NRC). A couple of weekends ago I attended the Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society (MHRS) Society AGM along with NRC Chair Penny Smart. MHRS continue to advocate strongly on behalf of the entire Mangawhai community for continued improvement of the environmental health of the Mangawhai Harbour, a job which they have done exceedingly well for almost 30 years now. As the elected regional council member for this area, I just want to reiterate to the wider community what I said at the meeting – keep up the great work, all harbour users, community members and local authorities appreciate it. I also mentioned that efforts were being made to improve navigation safety in the harbour with additional manpower over the summer months to monitor, engage and prosecute wayward water users.
1. The proposed new representation model– Te tauira hou kia whakatakoto for the upcoming 2022 Local Body Elections. Yes, the elections are just over a year away. For this representation review, we are proposing to keep the total number of councillors the same as we have now, nine, but with: Seven councillors elected from seven general constituencies (one from each); and two councillors elected from one region-wide Maori constituency. Check out the NRC website for more info: nrc.govt.nz/media/fyvp5dgg/representation-review_july-2021-initial-proposal-v2.pdf. Note submissions close on September 10. 2. Climate Change – Nga Taumata o te Moana: our strategy for tackling climate change Responding to an ever-changing world. A major concern for us all, NRC has done considerable work producing a strategy for this. See the following documentation and have a good read, it is well worth it: nrc.govt.nz/media/bgzdoltr/climate-change-strategy 2021.pdf. Please contact me if you have any further questions on this topical and worrying issue. Email or phone and lodge your concerns on the NRC Environmental Hotline 0800 504 639. Nga mihi Rick 021 823 770
