Gull flying in to Kaiwaka

thumbnail 09 MF-Gull copy-920Travellers through Kaiwaka may have another option on where to tank up on gas in the coming year with another company looking to establish a new service station within the town.

Gull NZ has applied for resource consent for an unmanned fuel site along SH1 next to Kaiwaka’s Three Furlongs hotel, and are currently working through the consenting process including obtaining a cultural values assessment as part of local iwi consultation requirements, Gull’s property and capital manager, Karl Mischewski says.

“The proposed site will be similar to Gull Wellsford, however as the site will be outside Auckland’s regional fuel tax zone, prices are likely to be considerably cheaper than Auckland,” he says. “The consenting process is ongoing and so we do not have a definitive timeframe, other than hoping consents are granted so that earthworks can commence later this year with a view to opening in 2021.”

Caltex spokesperson, Kim Woodgate, says Caltex NZ welcome the opportunity for people in Kaiwaka to have different service station options ‘when they’re fuelling up’.

“Caltex NZ is proud to support New Zealand’s local communities… we know Caltex Kaiwaka will be a great option for the times when people are after some bread and milk at the same time as fuel… or when they’re keen to keep out of the weather while filling up.”

Kaiwaka’s SH1 petrol station has been an icon in the town for over 50 years with a progression of independent owners and names including ‘Trevor Jacks’ and ‘Newey’s Service Station’ which was supported by Caltex.

Kaiwaka has been home to four different petrol pump sites, including the site of cafe ‘Fresh’, John Bowmar’s tractor yard along Mangawhai Road, as well as a line of pumps outside Jaques Four Square which were closed around five years ago.
