MAZ needs a new generation of volunteers

14 MF-MAZsigns-989With new exciting projects in the works and the average age of current volunteers in their early 70s, Mangawhai's favourite playground is looking for a new generation of helpers to ensure the community treasure lives on.

Mangawhai Activity Zone Charitable Trust (MAZ) spokesperson Ken Rayward says they would like to reduce the park’s average age of regular volunteers, which stands at 71, by having more people from a younger age bracket involved.

"The 70 age generation of MAZ volunteers challenges the 40, 50 and 60-year-olds to step up and join us in the pursuit of making MAZ the best recreational park in New Zealand, the one all our kids want to be at," he says. "We need a new generation to provide physical time or wise input, and any, but not required, modest financial input."

Rayward says that since the MAZ dream began over ten years ago, the park has been blessed with many talented and supportive people across a range of sectors to ensure the survival, and realisation, of the playground’s concept.

"MAZ would probably not have even commenced if it started today with the many current compliance challenges to be overcome, something we should all appreciate," he says. "We now have a number of great breakthrough opportunities which we want to encourage MAZ supporters to be a part of developing."

Near future projects include the expansion of the already famous skate bowl, an addition of a 500 metre Pump Track, clearance of the 10,000 metre walking and bike track, new fun signage and the development of a MAZ club House plus 'a lot more'.

"As all who visits knows, MAZ is the soul of Mangawhai," Rayward says. "More people involved will ensure a legacy which will continue to exist forever in the lives and memories of visitors and the people of Mangawhai."
