Fish Fry follows Logger Heads

loggerheads-207Logger Heads is back on Saturday March 12, with a growing base of traditionalists showing interest in the event.

Now in its third year, the contest allows single fin ‘Logs’ over 9-feet long with no leash.

Based at Mangawhai Heads, the annual Log contest has been greeted with enthusiasm, an indication of the continuous shift back towards traditional longboarding in New Zealand.

The event also links nicely with The Cove Fish Fry to be held in Waipu Cove the next day, Sunday March 13.

Contest Director Tony Baker saw this is a perfect opportunity to celebrate surfing in the North.

"The Cove Fish Fry is such a well run event and it brings people from all over to talk surfboard design. It's so awesome to have so many people in our little neck of the woods. And why not expand on this and keep people busy for the whole weekend?" he said.

Top entries included WSL surfer Thomas Kibblewhite (Red Beach) , Mischa Davis (Piha), Mickey T (Raglan) and a bevyy of other stand-outs including Trent Lillis (Auckland) , Sam Cox (Raglan) and local hot dogger Glen Johnson.

More international surfers are catching on.

This year event organisers Tony Baker, John Sutcliffe and Craig Freeman are expanding to include an after-match function which will host local surf artists and musicians, food and local crafts people.

“We have some great people in our local surfing community, and we'd like to share our little slice of paradise with our visitors.

“A huge thanks to Finn from Brixton NZ and Threadbox Mangawhai for the support.”

n The Logger Heads III Traditional Longboard Contest will be held on March 12 at Mangawhai Heads. Contact Tony Baker info@thesurfdojo.co.nz for more details.
