Songwriters to connect with audience onlineA Mangawhai-based musician’s inspiration group, Song Conversations, is helping emerging kiwi songwriters deepen their audience connection and build community engagement in response to the current global crisis with an online, collaborative music project.
Eight songwriters from around Aotearoa are taking part in ‘Audience Song’, which turns New Zealanders’ personal uplifting stories during Covid-19 into song. The eight songwriters include Grace Duncan (Alt-folk), Isla (Indie), Callum Lee (Eclectic nostalgic), Eli Moore (Indie jazz), Odds & Ends (Upbeat indie pop rock), Steve Tofa (Blues), Em Joy (Folk), Brayden & Leea (Versatile). Song Conversations cofounder Kiri Eriwata, says the project supports newly established songwriters to connect and grow their audience despite the uncertainty communities across the country are facing. “Due to Covid restrictions, the live music scene has had to rapidly adapt, with more musicians connecting online with their audience,” says Kiri. “Audience Song is designed to nurture each songwriter’s individual journey through online collaboration, peer support and professional marketing assistance. By the end of this project, each songwriter will have grown their online audience and gained a sense of belonging within a supportive songwriting collective.” Each songwriter brings different interests and life experiences, ensuring a range of audiences, and communities can connect with them and have their stories told. Eight stories have already been selected and the songwriters now have three weeks to write and record their song before a web-showcase on Wednesday September 30. “In our daily lives, we face challenges and uncertainty and we believe there are personal stories that deserve to be heard,” Eriwata says. “By showcasing a story, there is a chance to make a difference to our sense of wellbeing, and even raise the spirits of the wider community.” Song Conversations co-founder Kiri Eriwata is helping songwriters on their individual journey.
