Regional council sees some surprises

Kaipara’s Penny Smart and Hokianga-Kaikohe’s Justin Blaikie were re-elected unopposed when nominations closed in August.

That left seven NRC seats available in the remaining five constituencies. Out of the six hopefuls, newcomer Amy Macdonald won the Coastal Central constituency by over 500 votes beating previous seat holder Paul Dimery. Te Hiku constituency went to Colin ‘Toss’ Kitchen, ousting previous seat holder Mike Finlayson.

Coastal North newcomer Marty Robinson secured one spot in a surprise result, while former NRC Chairman Bill Shepherd and first term councillor Joce Yeoman fight for the second seat.

At deadline this issue, final results were still not known, though Yoeman held a slim 14 vote lead over Shepheard after special votes were counted. Long-time councillor John Bain, along with Jack Craw, took the two Whangarei Urban Constituency seats.
This shut out former council Deputy Chairman David Sinclair.

Rick Stolwerk is back for a fourth term in the Coastal South Constituency, well ahead of opponent David Lourie. A public powhiri and first meeting for the council is expected to take place
