National competition returns to the TavernCountry comes to town for the second year on November 2 when the Mangawhai Tavern again holds its Speed Shear competition.
After a highly popular and competitive start last year the event is back by popular demand and is quickly becoming a feature of the national events calendar and a jewel in Northland’s crown of quality sporting events. World class shearers from home and abroad vie for supremacy in what has become an exciting competition with split-second timing separating the best from the rest. Former Golden Shears champion and world record holder Dion King took out last years event which saw him come from behind in the heats to take out the cash prize for the open competition. However the opposition promises to be stronger this year as the competition gains wider popularity. This year The Mangawhai Tavern Speed Shear will offer the biggest prize in speed shearing in New Zealand with $10,000 cash and sponsor products in the prize pool. Building on last year’s success highlights will include local Northland hopeful Toa Henderson who will be heading back from an overseas stint to compete along with nationally renowned shearers Jack Fagan (Te Kuiti), Paerata Abraham (Masterton), and returning Dion King (Hawkes Bay) plus more of New Zealand’s up and coming talent from around the country. Shearers will be under the strict eyes of the judges, they will need to be quick and clean to qualify for the finals. There are three divisions this year – locals, seniors and the open. With heats beginning at 4pm and finals scheduled around 6pm a great evening of entertainment is in store. The original idea for Speed Shear came from locals Lailene McDonald and Phil Wedd, himself a competitive speed shearer and owner of Mobile Baa Baa. Along with collaboration from Rick Smith and the Mangawhai Tavern, they wanted to bring something a little different and exciting to Mangawhai. It hadn’t been done before so there were challenges in the first year, but with the huge support and sponsorship from local and national businesses it’s now an annual event. There is entertainment for everyone, it’s family friendly and from last years results, great fun beside the water in Mangawhai. But this is Speed Shear, and these competitors are quick so if you blink you’ll miss it. For details, see advertisement this page. |
