Shedding light on nutrition

Jan Van der Lee-131By the early 20th Century, scientists had discovered a remarkable correlation between the incidence of certain diseases and conditions, and the diets of those affected.

This led to a wide-scale investigation into the effects of diet on health, specific nutrients, how they are stored, how they are used, and what role they play in overall health. This particular area of study branched to become what we now know as Clinical Nutrition and is an ongoing field of investigation.

Today’s diet has strayed drastically from the ideal intake and balance of nutrients. Here are a couple of basic concepts I like to make priority when working with clients:

Ÿ Learn to cook! How did we survive without sauces in packets, cans and jars? Shop at local markets, grow your own vegetables where possible as fruits and vegetables lose vital nutrients when stored. Children love growing their own – a great way for them to begin to understand nutrition and where food comes from.

Ÿ Cut out refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, flavours and colours from the diet. These rob the body of vital nutrients and cause high acidity consuming the bodies mineral stores. Digestive and immune systems are weakened impeding absorption and nutrient assimilation. Read labels, you will be amazed at how much sugar or chemical sweetener is in so called ‘healthy’ cereals.

Ÿ Limit caffeinated beverages. Coffee and Cola drinks interrupt the absorption of nutrients, upset the vital balance of acid and bacteria in our gut required to break down food while placing a heavy load on the adrenal glands. Heavy coffee drinkers are mineral deficient.

Ÿ Identify food intolerances and mineral deficiencies. Many crucial minerals have diminished in New Zealand soils by an alarming 50 percent. Invest in the help of an expert if you suspect you or your family is suffering.
