Grant funds water system for community gardenOne of the recipients of the recent Mangawhai Club community grants was the Mangawhai community garden. Joan Farrell received widespread commendation for her efforts in getting the project started some years ago and was on hand to receive the cheque for $8,000 on behalf of the twenty-odd volunteers who get down and dirty in cultivating bundles of veggies for whoever needs them. Gradually growing in self-sufficiency, the money was intended for the purchase of a new tank to create their own water supply, no longer having to rely on the Domain supply which, when low, meant the gardens were found wanting. “We were amazed to get the grant,” says Joan. “It’s really quite exciting and it will make so much difference to the continuing summer production of the gardens.” Working quickly to the plan, the new tank is now installed and filled with the system fully functional. A jovial yet industrial band of volunteers arrive en masse Fridays 8.30am til 10.30am for harvesting, tilling, composting, and re-planting. Admiring their handiwork “People seem to gravitate towards tasks they are good at,” says Joan. “And we can get quite a lot done in a short time when we have numbers – and more volunteers are always welcome.” Julie Wintle, who works for Geneva Healthcare, is then entrusted with packing and delivery of the spoils to the elderly, frail and those unable to get around easily and who are most appreciative of the fresh veges. Community co-operation at its best. GREEN THUMBS: Some of the Mangawhai community garden volunteer team standing behind their watering system. |
