Two artists, two media, two stylesBold Black and Blue, the first exhibition of the new season and opening at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery on Friday 24 September, shows how two artists – photographer Joel Cayford and abstract artist David Just – take different approaches to create powerful images to make strong statements. Inspired by his father, Joel was interested in photography from an early age. He made his own enlarger, concentrated on black and white, particularly using Tri-X Kodak film, pushed to 3200 ASA to maximise contrast and grain size. Building on his exhibition success in December last year (Coastal Dreaming) Joel has ‘mined’ his negative collection and selected images for digital rendering and printing on to high quality, permanent, weather-proof palite foamed PVC board. This time his subject matter is landscape. “Most of the exhibition pictures were taken over the last 12 Covid months, inspired by what I call ‘heritage landscapes’ – dramatic rural landscapes with lonely old pine and macrocarpa trees – the surviving skyline of colonial farms,” says Joel. The works are bold, black and white. They are a must see. David is a self-taught artist, inspired by a friend’s acrylic art work. He has been self-employed in the building industry in a number of trade skills for over 30 years. “I’ve always appreciated different styles of abstract artwork and love experimenting with different techniques. You will see this demonstrated in my work,” says David. David enjoys the challenge of creating large paintings that capture your attention. The works are dramatic and powerful. They won’t disappoint. Exhibitions at the gallery will change each fortnight. n Bold Black and Blue is open daily at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, 45 Moir St, Mangawhai from Friday September 24, 10am to 3pm until midday on Wednesday October 6.
