Bagpipe competition a lasting legacy

IMG 2550-32A fantastic evening’s entertainment is promised for those interested in Highland Pipes or music in general.

Helen McGregor's dying wish back in 2003 was that a special piping competition be established to enable top class pipers to compete in a special event where they could be as creative and innovative as they wished. It was her idea that they be able to flair their fingers and enjoy the unique experience of playing the bagpipes to their own tune.

Each entrant plays his/her own piece for eight minutes. There are normally around 20 competitors who aim for a first prize of $300, a second of $200 and third prize of $100.

Bain McGregor met his wife Helen at Blair Atholl Castle in Blair Atholl Scotland. Bain was the piper in residence for the 10th Duke of Atholl, Ian Murray, and Helen was a tour guide at the castle as she spoke fluent French and German.

Helen was not a piper but played a French horn and tenor horn in the Whangarei Brass Band and Tenor Drum in both the Vale of Atholl pipe Band Scotland and the Whangarei pipe Band. Even though she didn't play the pipes she had a strong love and passion for the instrument and especially those players who wished to exceed the boundaries.

The competition celebrates all that is inspiring in Highland piping and gives pipers from all over New Zealand a chance to create something new and special in her name.

n The Helen McGregor Memorial Trophy, start 7pm December 31, tickets at the door of the Celtic Barn, Waipu. Head off to your own New Years Eve celebrations afterwards.
