Dogs track fugitive
A high profile fugitive, wanted for burglary crimes committed in many parts of the North Island, was apprehended on an undisclosed road in Mangawhai on August 6.

Starting in Mt Maunganui, the wanted man stole a car and was pursued by several police units until they pulled out of the chase due to the manner of his driving. The police helicopter took over but the offender managed to elude chasers until sighted again in Orewa and was tracked through Warkworth and up to Wellsford, Senior Constable Graham Gough says.

“A local officer comprehended the man was heading to Mangawhai and deployed road spikes which blew the offenders tyres so he took off on foot. However he was soon tracked and brought down by police dogs and their handlers,” he says. “Seeing he has been a wanted man and committed many crimes including cutting off his electronic tag… it was a very good catch.”

The offender has been charged with multiple burglary offences and possibly more charges to be laid.

Burglary, assault, car stolen
Two local dairy workers have been left traumatised after being chased, threatened and assaulted in the early morning hours of July 28. The ordeal began when a vehicle with three male occupants with lights flashing pulled out of the Mangawhai Domain driveway around 4.15am into the path of a 58-year-old local man heading to work on a Kaiwaka farm.

“At first he mistook the car for security officers and slowed down but fled once he was confronted by the irate youth in the car,” Senior Constable Gough says. “The offenders then pursued him, so he headed for his workplace hoping that some other men would be there but only a young female worker was on site. One of the occupants chased the man into the building and yelled at him ‘why didn’t you stop?’”

The 22-year-old woman tried to call police while her co-worker took off through the back of the shed. Instead of following, the offender then turned to the woman and demanded her cell phone. When she refused he shoved her into the concrete wall. Meanwhile, another occupant managed to find the keys to the woman’s car, a Suzuki Vitara and drove away from the scene. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Pauls Road minus variable items including clothing, jewelry and a wallet containing the owner’s identification.

Although naturally shaken by the aggressive nature of the unprovoked attack, both the man and woman were physically unharmed.

An 18-year-old Tinopai male has been arrested and charged with burglary, male-assault-on-female and common assault while a 17-year-old male has been charged with unlawfully taking a vehicle. Both are due in court on August 17.

“We received another report of an incident of the car charging around Mangawhai chasing other vehicles that night,” Gough says. “Seems like they were just looking for a fight.”
