New committee and new ideas from Domain Society AGM

BY JULIA WADE

Lively debate, suggestions for a new way forward and a fresh committee line up with some old hands returning was the result of the Mangawhai Domain AGM on August 12.

A 50-strong floor of Domain Society members gathered to hear an update of Domain news as well as witness the forming of the 2018-2019 Domain Committee (DC). With most of the 2017-2018 committee stepping down from their roles, Neville Polkinghorne, the remaining member was joined by former members Mark Gash, John Dickie and Pip and Maun Beavan, and new members Trevor Downey and Martin Arrow-Smith.
In his address, outgoing DC Chair Clive Davey acknowledged the time and energy of the out-going committee, saying they were ‘a great team to work with’.

Davey also responded to the matters raised recently by a Society member regarding how the Society’s accounts were administered, especially whether an auditor should be required. The discussion drew a mixed response from the floor with some stating cost as a reason to not use an auditor while another member saying he would not join a committee that did employ one, a statement supported by Kaipara District Councillor Peter Weathy.

“An auditor is important as it protects the members and organisation, an independent third party. Someone from the outside to say if or when things are going wrong.”

Nominated returning committee member Mark Gash acknowledged the time and effort volunteer members put into the DC and offered a new approach in the means of appointing a funded employee.

“Had some really good people on the committee over the years and this committee have made an effort to comply the best they can,” he says. “Due to the time involved in these positions it’s getting harder to get people to stand for the committee. It might be the right time now to look at having a paid manager.”

The idea received interest and support from the floor with one member commenting ‘it was a no-brainer’ followed with suggestions of applying for funding to cover the cost of a salary. The position would include overseeing committee members fulfilling duties of their office and be responsible to the committee.

“The new committee would have to decide,” he says. “It’s just a concept at this stage and will come at a cost but I believe it is the best way forward.”

In a statement sent to the Focus after the AGM, the Domain Committee stated they wanted to assure the Mangawhai community of the new committee’s commitment to ‘the short and long term development of this valuable community-owned asset for its many current and possible new uses.’

With four returning members, the new team has a combined total of more than 30 years of DC experience, and will be dealing with a number of changes due to the new rules as well as ‘announced changes to umbrella legislation which govern Societies’.
DC also say they hear the calls for more activities at the Domain.

“We welcome and will support suggestions from individuals and groups that want to use the Domain for purposes in line with continuance of a vibrant multi-purpose facility for the benefit of the Mangwhai community.’

 More information is available at the website mangawhaidomain.org.nz/home, updated by volunteers. Changes will be added over the next few weeks.

“DUE TO THE TIME INVOLVED IN THESE POSITIONS IT’S GETTING HARDER TO GET PEOPLE TO STAND FOR THE COMMITTEE. IT MIGHT BE THE RIGHT TIME NOW TO LOOK AT HAVING A PAID MANAGER.”
