Volunteers join for dune restorationSpotted recently was this planting effort as part of an ongoing dune restoration project at Langs Beach. Earlier in the week another section of bank was reshaped to recreate a dune profile. The area was planted with 960 spinifex, native dune grasses which trap windblown sand, helping to build the dune and provide a buffer from the sea. Wiwi were also planted along the top. Around 15 volunteers completed the job, including members of Langs Beach CoastCare, local residents, members of Waipu Surf Club, and NRC and WDC staff. This followed restoration of an adjacent section last year. It is hoped to complete the dune to the northern end of the beach next year. PHOTO/MELODY TITO |
