Community quilts at the heart of annual exhibition

thumbnail Lyn King with one of the quilts-814Matakohe’s Kauri Museum is hosting the Otamatea Quilters Group annual exhibition October 23 to November 22. Included in the exhibition are a range of quilts – from entirely hand worked to machine stitched, embroidered and embellished, and from contemporary to traditional. All follow the theme Elements of Design-Repetition, presenting a challenge to each quilter with the opportunity to explore the creative side of their art. Repetition through elements of design has created some stunning quilts.

Community quilts are at the heart of the exhibition. This year the Otamatea Quilters Group have chosen to donate quilts to the Plunket Society. The stroller and cot quilts made for Plunket have been carefully planned around the needs of young families.

The group was formed by a number of quilters and patch workers in 1984, with the late Shirley Martin at the helm. Two of the members, Margaret Needham and Elinor Beasley, who joined in those early years, still belong to the group, who back then exhibited in the Paparoa Memorial Hall.

Despite Covid-19 the exhibition will proceed, though with several changes to the traditional programme. Quilters will be in attendance on Friday October 23 only over Labour weekend, and there will be no sales tables or raffles.

n Admission vouchers, giving access to this exhibition only, are valid for the duration of the show. They can be picked up from local sewing centres. Admission tickets to The Kauri Museum also include this exhibition. For further information contact Glennys McKenzie (09) 432 0409 or Lyn King (09) 439 2262. The Kauri Museum is open 7 days a week, 9a–5pm. Phone (09) 431 7417 or online kaurimuseum.com
