Weed Action team gets to work at Kainui St ReserveKainui St reserve is a delightful estuary reserve running from the end of Kainui St through the Mike Keating memorial reserve and on to Molesworth Drive. It is well used by locals and visitors alike. Much of it, unfortunately, has been degraded over the years by garden dumping. Many of the weeds and plants in old gardens just do not die when you dump them in a pile or over the bank. They keep growing and smothering whatever is nearest. On a fine Saturday afternoon at the end of June a group of keen locals got together to start the work on the weeds in Kainui Reserve. Spurred on by the presence of a delicious coffee cake for afternoon tea, baked by local Jane Vaughan, the team got to work. The first to be tackled was the jasmine smothering two pohutukawa seedlings growing on the bank edge of the estuary. Agapanthus and Cape ivy were also worked on as was the watsonia near the entrance off Kainui St. By the end of the working bee, a trailer load of green waste was taken away, as well as a car boot load to feed some local rescue goats! And there is still plenty more to come out. The team ended the day with delicious afternoon tea and social time together. Next Weed action day is planned for July 24, end of Kainui St. - PHOTO/SUPPLIED |
