More storage means op shop taking bigger itemsJULIA WADE Due to a spike in gifted items, one of Mangawhai’s second-hand stores has expanded, allowing the community to donate, and purchase, bulkier household items. Mangawhai Community Opportunity Shop (aka The Factory) now has a storage unit available to stash furniture and whiteware – beds, dressing tables, fridges, tables and chairs – a difficult feat in the past due to limited space. The extra storage space will also help with the shop’s recent growth of product, spokesperson Dianne Christensen says, which is partly due to the St John shop currently being closed. “We are wanting to be able to happily accept larger items when people want to donate so have secured some additional storage, however, with this we are needing a greater range of volunteers to assist with driving, lifting and shifting,” she says. “The more people we have on the list, the more pick-ups we can do and it spreads the load, particularly with many of our volunteers being older. If there are some younger and strong individuals who are happy to offer a small amount of time each month with hours to suit, that would be very helpful.” Being able to carry more stock also means Factory staff will be looking at new and innovative ideas to market and sell the extra product. Christensen says keep an eye on the Factory Facebook page. Factory volunteers also had a well-deserved get-together recently on National Volunteer Week, June 20-26, a chance Christensen says to thank all the staff for their hard work. “The Factory manager, Vicki Cagan, spoke highly of everyone, and one of our volunteers, Di Witherford, gave an amazing response, commenting on what a privilege it is to work and serve the community, and also noted the outstanding skills our group has, whether working on the shop floor, sorting linen, pricing jewellery or driving the van and collecting goods,” she says. “Di also said what a fun place the Factory was to work in, with both the staff and customers. It certainly was a testament to management, staff and volunteers at The Factory.” n Interested in lending skill, muscle and time to help the Factory or want to donate larger items?
