Paint August yellow to support cancer fundraisersBY JULIA WADE
Local organisers for a vital, valuable cause are inviting the Mangawhai community to ‘paint August yellow’ while having a whole lot of fun. Cancer Society fundraising coordinators for Mangawhai, Patti Bottomley, Paulette Phillis and Linda Mabey, have been busy arranging a couple of entertaining events for people to attend and donate to the Society’s largest annual fundraiser, Daffodil Day, officially on August 31. Since 1990, the iconic event symbolised by bright yellow daffodils, raises awareness of the devastation of cancer in NZ with one in three Kiwi’s affected, and also inspires people to get together and support the Society's work for cancer research, patient and family care, and education. To begin the local fundraising week, Mangawhai Tavern will host a quiz night on Tuesday August 27 at 7pm, entry $10 per person. “This is always a great fun night,” Paulette Phillis says. “There are no number restrictions so gather a team together and come along.” On Thursday August 29, starting at 11am, the Mangawhai Club is hosting a fish & chip lunch including complimentary welcome drink, spot prizes galore, raffle, plus ‘amazing items’ for the mid break auction, with ‘our favourites’ Jone Yelcich and John Lambert providing musical entertainment. Tickets available at the Club, $25 per person. Having some loose change in your pocket will be helpful on Friday August 30, as collectors including renowned pair ‘Daff & Dill’ will be out in force visiting local shops, cafes and work places with a street appeal to round up the fundraising. “We hope this will again be another very successful week for the cancer appeal,” Phillis says. “We look forward to your support for this year’s events and appreciate the generosity of time and support donated by so many members of the Mangawhai community.“ The yellow daffodil, Cancer Society’s icon, symbolises rebirth and new beginnings and for those affected by the disease, hope for a cancer-free future.
