Mangawhai tsunami information boards for visitors and localsTen new tsunami information boards have been installed in Mangawhai.
Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group spokesperson Graeme MacDonald said the information boards are part of Northland’s network of tsunami notification and education options, which also includes outdoor and indoor tsunami sirens and smartphone alerts. “The key advantage of the information boards is that they’re a prompt for people as they enter a beach or coastal area,” says Mr MacDonald. “This is particularly important for visitors from other locations or other countries, who may not be conscious that New Zealand’s entire coastline is at risk of tsunami.” The information boards each have maps, which show the specific location and its tsunami evacuation zones as well as the nearest safe (green) zones. They also highlight alerting and information options (such as sirens, smartphone alerts, social media and radio and TV) and the natural warning signs of tsunami. “People should also be aware of the risk of local source tsunami (those generated on or close to the coast), which could arrive ahead of any official warning,” says Mr MacDonald. “A strong earthquake that is hard to stand up in or one that lasts longer than a minute, or out-of-the ordinary sea behaviour, such as sudden rise or fall and/or unusual noise, are all signs to head inland or to high ground.” The new information boards in Mangawhai are installed on the public toilet blocks at Wintle St and Moir St; at the Mangawhai Domain; the Mangawhai Heads Rd beach access; the Alamar boat ramp; the corner of North Ave and Alamar Cres; the Robert St, Lincoln St and Pearson St reserves; and on Moir St by the Mangawhai Tavern. Residents and visitors can find out if they live, work or play in a tsunami evacuation zone, and plan their evacuation route, by checking out Northland tsunami evacuation maps at nrc.govt.nz/evacuationzones.
