Tiny frog special to the Brynderwyns

New Zealand has four frog species that are amongst the oldest species in the world and which are found nowhere else. One of these is the Hochstetter’s frog (Leiopelma hochstetteri) and the Brynderwyns is one of 11 locations in the North Island where they survive. In Northland they also reside around Warkworth and Waipu.

Tony Beauchamp, Technical Adviser at the Department of Conservation, Whangarei, and an expert on Hochsetter's frogs has been invited to speak at The Friends of the Brynderwyns Society AGM on October 1 in Mangawhai. He will give an illustrated talk about the frog's biology, breeding cycle, detection, gaps in our knowledge, and threats to its long-term survival.

The Hochstetter’s frog is a tiny creature which lives beside shaded streams. It is semi-aquatic, nocturnal and is only slightly larger than a $2 coin. Over many years its habitat has been affected and reduced by forest clearance, animal browsing and road development. It faces predation and competition from introduced species and it's considered “At risk” with a “Declining” status.

Rachel Elliott, a member of the Society’s committee and the owner of a bush property above Kapawiti Road, has seen frogs in her stream. She says, “The Brynderwyns have many streams providing a stronghold for Hochstetter’s frogs. It’s a privilege to have them. Tony’s talk gives us an opportunity to learn about these special inhabitants and what measures might be taken to conserve them. Everyone is welcome to attend.”

n The Friends of the Brynderwyns Society AGM and talk by Tony Beauchamp will be held at 2.30pm on October 1 at Domain Hall, Moir St, Mangawhai. Everyone is welcome to attend.
