MHVLS AGM signals start of Surf Life Saving seasonThe Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Life Saving Club (MHVLS) Annual General Meeting held on August 27 was well attended by club members and associates as well as a number of guests. Northland Regional Councillor and Waipu Surf Life Saving Club President, Rick Stolwerk, was in attendance along with Darryl Reardon, Vice President of the Mangawhai Boating and Fishing Club, and Ian Godfrey, Surf Life Saving Northern Region Board Chairman.
Nominations were received for a number of key positions, and they were filled accordingly. Jon Drucker was voted in as Club President, and Mike Ardern took the Vice President's role. The club has recently been granted a Maritime New Zealand exemption allowing the continued use of the Sea Rider Rescue Vessel at Mangawhai Heads. The club is also working with the Northland Regional Council Harbour Master and other relevant parties in developing an Advisory System for Safety and Marine Conditions to cross the bar at the Mangawhai Harbour entrance. After the AGM, Darryl Reardon, on behalf of the Mangawhai Boating and Fishing Club, presented the club (in particular the rescue vessel crew) with the Toki Award, in recognition of the excellent service it provides to the local fishing and marine community. Mention was made of the crew's courage and strength in times of adversity, and their selfless performance while rescuing people and vessels in atrocious conditions.
n The Surf Life Saving season at Mangawhai Heads begins at Labour Weekend and volunteer lifeguards will be on patrol during the weekend and public holidays until Easter 2018.
