Digestive health and skin health, the connectionIn my 30-plus years of work-ing as a beauty therapist I have worked with many skin condi-tions, and continued in my education to provide the best answers and treatments to my clients. One thing I have learnt over this time is the massive connection that our gut health has on our skin health. This idea isn’t new. Researchers as far back as the 1930s suspected a link between gut health and skin and, of course, they were right.
If you are experiencing in-flammation in your gut you will see it on your skin. The gut-skin axis is a bidirectional pathway that connects the gut and skin. Through this connec-tion your gut microbes send signals to your skin that influ-ence things like skin structure, inflammation, and the produc-tion of sebum – the oily, waxy substance normally found on skin. If anything in your gut is disrupted in that signalling process, your skin will feel the effects. Stress is also an influ-encer on our gut health. The good news is we know this. What that means is there is no miracle cream that will treat acne, psoriasis, dermati-tis, eczema or rosacea. Instead we need to have a complete program, one that will cleanse and restore your digestive sys-tem, rebuild the micro flora with healthy bacteria so that the cause of the skin condition is being treated while also us-ing the right skincare formula-tions topically to support the microbiome of your skin and your protective layer, the acid mantle. DMK skincare is proven to get your skin in balance, and the DMK digestive tune-up sys-tem – a program of powerful herbs that you take internally – will support your digestive health. If you are experiencing any of these skin conditions and would like some help, contact us for a consultation, this can be done online through zoom or in clinic. Finish 2021 with better digestive health, something you can do for yourself. Alex Donald is owner of Pure Essence Face & Body Clinic, Waipu. Online pureessence.co.nz |
