News in BriefWightman wins 16th title
Adding to an already impressive list of successes on the green, local Sue Wightman again showed her mettle winning the recent Mangawhai Bowls open singles beating Joan Erceg (Kensington) 21-15 in a close contest. Leading 9-2 after eight ends, Erceg fought back to be just 18-15 down by the 20th end but a two on the 21st and a single on the 22nd saw Wightman triumph in what was her 16th Centre title. St Andrew’s Day Ceilidh Last years ceilidh was bursting at the seams, so revellers will surely love a fun night of dance and Scottish music this year. The Twisty Willow band have been calling barn dances - or ceilidhs - for over 20 years and make the evening easy and enjoyable. Money raised goes to the Waipu Croquet Club for their new clubrooms. A bar will be open and a supper served. Waipu Caledonian Hall, November 30, from 7.30pm, tickets $15 from Waipu Lotto Shop or on the door. Be there for a great night out. Where are your teens? Local police are concerned about teenage drinkers who gather on Mangawhai Heads surf beach late on weekend evenings and would like to encourage parents to make sure they know where their children are at nights. Around 10pm on November 8, police came across a number of 15-16-year-olds drinking at the beach, and discovered a large number of parents were unaware of their whereabouts, Constable Dale Wewege says. “In one example, it was a case of the child saying they were staying with one friend but actually being somewhere else,” he says. “Just want to urge parents to double-check where their kids are at, meet or contact other parents if their child says they are staying with them… it’s about their safety.” Kaipara District Council’s Alcohol Control Bylaw stipulates that people are not allowed to drink or possess alcohol on Mangawhai Head’s surf beach 8.30pm to 7am. From 8.30pm on December 22 through to 7am January 13 the following year, a 24 hour ban is also in place.
