Charity golf tournament distributes $85k to local organisations

Golf crowd-471The third Spirit of Mangawhai Charity Golf Tournament – held on Friday 15 November 15 at Tara Iti Golf Club – drew 88 players and raised funds of $85,000 that were donated to 20 charities and non-profit organisations serving the greater Mangawhai community.

Recipients included the Mangawhai Museum, Mangawhai Beach School, St John Ambulance, Mangawhai Volunteer Fire Brigade, Mangawhai Activity Zone, Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Services, Mangawhai Football Club, Mangawhai Tennis Club, Mangawhai Golf Club, The Helping Paws Charitable Trust, Mangawhai Helping Hands, Te Whai Community Trust, Mangawhai Kindergarten, Bayley’s Make A Wish, Kaipara Basketball, Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society, Kaiwaka Sports Association and Waka-Ama.

“As always our annual Spirit of Mangawhai tournament is an amazing way to both mark the start of the golfing season and partner with friends, neighbours, members and business associates within our community,” said Tara Iti general manager Matt Guzik. “It also provides a wonderful opportunity for us to open up the club to those individuals who would love to tick Tara Iti off their bucket list and enjoy a special game of golf in our beautiful area, while at the same time giving back and supporting our community at large. We believe our annual charity golf tournament continues to be a real success”

Guzik added that as always this event would not have been possible without the co-operation and generosity of the club's membership and staff. Tara Iti Golf Club currently employees more than 115 local men and women, in addition to a largely local caddie corps that numbers close to 100.

Nearly all of them were required on the day as the entire property was given over to visiting players, in the spirit of some world-class golf, followed by a post-tournament awards ceremony, where tasty gourmet pizzas were served from the club’s travelling pizza oven, a vintage 1937 pickup truck, and to cool off after the game ice cream from their 1930 Austin 7 van.
“The weather was mild and the golf course was in perfect condition on the day,” Guzik said. “I think I speak for everyone at Tara Iti when I say we openly support the tremendous work that’s going on in our local area and that $85,000 certainly assists a number of our not-for-profit organisations to progress in more ways than one! Of course we would welcome more support from our local community and hope that next year more organisations will utilise this annual tournament as a platform for their fundraising.”
