Police Snippet

Car destroys bedroom
Two Wellsford tenants had a lucky escape on Saturday April 9 when they returned from an evening walk with their dog to find a car smashed into their rented home.

The female driver, the solo occupant of the car, hit the median barrier outside Rodney College, sending the car careening down the hill on the wrong side of the road and into one of the bedrooms of the house.

The car had previously been seen driving erratically along State Highway One through Wellsford around 6pm.

Police Senior Sergeant Geoff Medland said the impact was so great it destroyed the whole room.

The driver was flown to Whangarei Hospital with fractures to her lower back and suspected lung damage.

Police say the incident is undergoing further investigation.

As the tenants did not have household insurance, Sergeant Medland, along with the Lions Club, is asking assistance from the community to donate any household items.

“It is a timely reminder about the importance of household insurance, even if you are renting,” he says.

To donate please contact Senior Sergeant Geoff Medland at Wellsford Police Station on (09) 423 8228
