Calibre high for Outward Bound ScholarshipsThree prominent local citizens were recently entrusted with the task of selecting two young local people to attend the Outward Bound School in the Marlborough sounds, sponsored jointly by the Mangawhai Club and the Mangawhai Focus.
A total of 11 applicants presented themselves to adjudicators Yvette Urlich, David Strachan and Phillip Smith who formed their criteria, asked pertinent questions and listened to each applicant relate their achievements to date, their future goals and how they saw an Outward Bound course could be instrumental in their futures. While some candidates were initially a little nervous speaking about themselves it appears the most difficult task was that of the panel in having to select one young woman and one young man from the group. Those successful were Alice Malyon and Morgan Gubb, both seniors at Rodney College. Comments from the judges were unanimous in their praise of the outstanding calibre of the applicants agreeing that the task of discarding nine in favour of two was “horrible” and “agonising” such was the impression made by all. Judges also agreed that if this was a cross-section of what their families, our secondary schools and colleges are turning out then the community and our futures are in good hands. The pair will attend the Outward Bound School for three weeks in July. |
