Record amount raised to fight cancerBY JULIA WADE
In keeping with the giving spirit often seen in Mangawhai and surrounding area, a recent series of fundraising events for a vital worthy cause has resulted in a record financial success. Daffodil Week, August 26-31, saw a line-up of activities in Mangawhai including a pub quiz, high tea and auction, and street collection pull in more than $14,000 for the Cancer Society of NZ. Local organisers, Patti Bottomley and Paulette Phillis, say they are ‘very thankful to the Mangawhai community’ for their generosity. ‘To start, 140 Mangawhai ‘intelligentsia’ made up 16 teams, put their brains to the test and had a whole lot of fun at the Mangawhai Tavern’s Pub Quiz challenge while raising $3000… a great success,” Paulette says. “On Thursday Joanne and her team at The Club organised the amazing ‘High Tea’ which was made by the bowling ladies… and auction with 160 people attending which produced a successful fundraising result of over $7000.” Local ‘auctioneers’ John Phillis and John Lambert energised the crowd to raise their hands for a diverse range of products including a breathtaking 1300-feet Bay of Islands parasail and a chance to ride pillion on a set of Harley Davidsons, setting off a bidding war among the thrill-seekers in the crowd. Guest speaker, representative from the Puhoi to Warkworth Highway Jonathon Green delivered a presentation on the current progress of the project. Kaipara musician Jone Yelcich also provided entertainment along with raffles and a silent auction of an exquisite handcrafted quilt made by local craft artist Maureen Lister, and two hand carved wooden chairs. On the official Daffodil Day, August 31, a team of collectors including ‘Daf and Dil’, ‘braved the inclement weather’ and raised a further $4000 to the total. “We were humbled by the time given by collectors and generosity of so many who donated goods and services to the auctions and raffles,” Paulette says. “Thank you all, it was great to work with an amazing group of people.” Going once, going twice… Mangawhai residents and guests took a chance to bid for wine, art and even a ride on a Harley, to raise cash for a crucial cause. |
