Garden ramblers be readyThis is normally a time when gardeners are busy tearing out weeds, but this year many of our exhibitors are tearing out their hair trying valiantly to prepare their plots for the annual November Mangawhai Palmers Planet Garden Ramble in the face of prolonged and hefty dumps of rain.
Any break in the cloud sees buds and blooms valiantly bursting forth but the spreading of mulch, bark and compost is seriously impeding any gardener who has not invested heavily in Red Bands - not to mention mowing sodden lawns. However, such is the resilience of these servants of the turf that their edict ‘it’ll be alright on the day’ still stands strong. With 10 new gardens among the 19 on display, ramblers are going to want plenty of time to get around the offering and take in all this growing area has to offer. This is a town and country affair so a good pair of walking shoes could also be a handy part of your kit, and an overnight stay is almost essential to see all that’s to be seen and enjoyed. From tidy compact cottage gardens, to rambling but incredibly interesting farmstyle gardens showing variety in contour and plantings to the garden art proving gardening is not all about plants but just as much about visual and interesting objects that all serve to complement each other. From vines and wines to olives, a mature totara park walk and, if you’re timing’s right, a chance to feed the eels that inhabit one seven acre spread, this is a town and country ramble and the variety in styles and ingenuity of gardeners will be something to keep ramblers talking about well into the growing season. n Mangawhai Garden Ramble, November 19-20, mangawhaigardenramble.org, or on Facebook. |
