Chopper saves precious timeEarlier this year Mangawhai grandparents-in-waiting Paul Rae and Michelle Jago were looking forward to the arrival of twins from Michelle’s daughter Morgan Doyle when fate intervened.
Twins are often premature but this premature labour also brought with it signs of complications. An ambulance was called from nearby Maungaturoto. The volunteer St John staff quickly decided Morgan’s situation was becoming more serious by the minute and called in the Northland Trust Rescue Helicpoter, keeping Morgan in a holding pattern until the chopper arrived. The expansive lawn at their Cove Road property proved a good landing spot but, on the back of a horrendous July storm the skids sank almost to its belly in the sodden surface adding an anxious moment to the lift-off. As the paramedics quickly established Morgan’s dire situation she was whisked off to Whangarei hospital but further assessment had her very quickly back aboard the chopper in a mercy dash to Auckland where she delivered twins. But the complications were such that the boy twin was not able to be revived. Once settled and showing good recovery, baby daughter Ariah was again airlifted back to Whangarei where Morgan roomed in with her until well enough to go home to Mangawhai where, at ten weeks old, she is now a healthy six pounder. While there was obvious sadness in losing their boy baby, Morgan’s mother Michelle has high praise for the Rescue helicopter service. “We were fortunate we had room for them to land but had it not been for the chopper the end result just doesn’t bear thinking about as both mum and surviving baby had gone through a tremendously stressful delivery,” she says, also very grateful for the initial service by St Johns volunteers. HOME: Baby Ariah, and Mum Morgan are grateful to local emergency services. |
