Car and bike show now a whole town affairWaipu will awaken to the third annual Car and Bike show or, in fact, anything on wheels, on Waitangi Weekend Sunday at the Caledonian Park, but this year will be preceded by a rock ‘n’ roll dance. Last year over 400 cars and 100 bikes provided a grand display of fine historical and modern motoring making the show a great success and promoting hours of earnest discussion between both the petrolheads, the ardent enthusiasts and the general public. The numbers on display make it the biggest and most colourful local event of its kind. Rods, muscle cars, classics, vintage, military, rally – along with a wide array of bikes, old and new, you name it and you will see it at Waipu. The success of the show is down to the passion of people coming out to show their pride and joy and their car collections and also the fabulous support from the public. There will be enough interest to keep families perusing for hours with music, food stalls, face-painting and kids rides making this a great family day out. The organisers acknowledge the efforts of exhibitors by providing 13 different categories which carry trophies and prizes. Not only are there local judges but the public also get to vote for their choice of best overall vehicle which wins the Full Noise Auto Restoration People’s Choice Award. Participating ladies are also invited to dress up for the event in the era of their vehicles to be in to win prizes. “We are grateful to have such fabulous business support through sponsorship and donations that cover set-up costs and prizes,” says spokesperson Karen Cave. “Fundraising on the day is distributed throughout the community by Waipu Lions.” The Waipu Business Association is offering a prize for the best supporting retail outlet for the weekend which means the whole town is involved with the car show and the whole community stands to benefit. This year proceeds are going to the wider community with 25 per cent tagged for the Northland Rescue Helicopter. Local groups will also benefit by providing helpers throughout the day or running a food stall. To kick off the weekend a rock ’n’ roll band will perform at the Waipu Razza (RSA) on the Saturday evening giving car entrants and visitors a chance to let their hair down enjoy some community hospitality.
