Tara Iti ranked second on world golf list

thumbnail Tara Iti Session 2-52-397Respected industry publication Golf Digest has ranked Northland golf course Tara Iti at number two on its annual list of the world's best courses outside the United States.

Located at Te Arai beach, just south of Mangawhai, the exclusive invite-only course has been developed by American billionaire Ric Kayne who has plans for more beach-front courses in the area.

“It is a phenomenal honour to be recognised as number two in the world outside of the US, particularly if you consider the contenders,” says Tara Iti golf club general manager Matt Guzik.“However, this could not have been accomplished without the strong vison and support of Ric and Suzanne Kayne. I think it’s the combination of Ric’s vision, Tom Doak the course designer’s architectural talent, and our passionate professional team that makes Tara Iti the unique place it is. Our club culture has also been integral to our success.”

The number one ranking was claimed by Ireland’s Royal County Down Golf Course, but Golf Digest has hinted that Tara Iti could challenge for the top spot next year.

“I believe Tara Iti is a wonderful asset to golf here and will continue to enhance New Zealand’s international profile,” adds Guzik. “In my mind it really is the greatest place to visit and play golf with friends in the world. Here at Tara Iti we are focused on creating a special atmosphere and life-long memories for our members and guests.”

The course has previously hosted celebrities like former US President Barack Obama, and surfing icon Kelly Slater.

“It is an honour for any club to be spoken of in the same breath as Royal Melbourne and Muirfield, not to mention a club in its infancy like Tara Iti,” says Tara Iti course superintendent Brian Palmer. “I hope that the course Tom Doak and Brian Slawnik created will continue to amuse golfers for the next couple hundred years.”

Other New Zealand courses breaking into the Top 100 include the Tom Doak designed Cape Kidnappers (22), Kauri Cliffs (43), Jack’s Point (44), Paraparaumu Beach (65), and Kinloch (94).
