Regal run for school

Regal Run fundraiser-67A royal gathering of a different kind took place in Mangawhai on the morning of the Queen’s Birthday, as keen contenders assembled for Rodney College’s ‘Come As Your Favourite Royal’ Fun Run fundraiser.

Leaving Mangawhai Tavern at 10am, the 50 strong crowd of walkers and runners were also joined by a small number of Lions supporters, who were parked by the Tavern and ‘dragged convivially out of their camper vans’ for the cause.

Although participants were encouraged to dress as their favourite imperial, many chose to be royal undercover, however the Fresh Prince of Bel Air made an appearance while others trekked the 5km sporting tiaras and English flags.

Rodney College principal, Irene Symes, said it was a lovely occasion.

“We are very grateful to the members of the Mangawhai community who really got behind this event to support their local college,” she says. “One kind person opened up their property for us to run through, while the Mangawhai Tavern opened its doors to provide an excellent watering hole at the finish line. We also had a number of generous sponsors who donated prizes.”

The college run, which raised over a thousand dollars this year, has become a successful annual fundraising event organised by the enthusiastic teachers and parents of the school’s PTA.

“They’re an energetic bunch who have been working hard to get our students a cover for their canteen before the end of this year,” Symes says. “They also share the Rodney College goal of connecting with our community and having some fun.”

A number of participants received prizes including Best Team which just had to go to the visiting ‘Lions’, Georgia Brierly was Fastest Female with a time of 21m 29s, Fastest Male was Daniel Woods in 19m 19s, Best Dressed went to Jo Yuretich for her lookalike of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and Oldest Runner went to Murray Glen who decided to keep his age a secret.

RIGHT ROYALS: Surrounded by keen runners and walkers, Rodney College principal Irene Symes flew herself as the UK flag while PTA member Jo Yuretich decided to let her inner royal show as the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
