Wings and wheels to fill domain

Microlight Photo - 1 -155A display with a difference will arrive at the Mangawhai Domain next Sunday, February 18, weather permitting. Aviation and microlight aircraft of different types are expected to fly in and join members of the Wellsford and Warkworth Vintage Car Club in a display which is a first for Mangawhai.

While the Domain has seen gala days, dog shows, car shows and sporting activities this will be something a little different and bound to bring the viewing community out in numbers.

The event is the brainchild of local microlight pilot Steve Williams who has been quietly working with the Northland Microlight Club and the Mangawhai Domain committee to make this event become a reality.

Similar to a car show when you never know how many are coming until they actually arrive, aircraft are expected from as far away as Hamilton and Tauranga in the south, and from Kerikeri in the north.

An invitation sent out to aircraft owners from all over the upper North Island met a positive response and a good turnout is expected in spite of the limited length of runway available.

“Landing could be a bit of a challenge,” says Steve Williams “as the landing strip runs south to north, contrary to the prevailing winds but we just hope for nothing more than 5-8 knots and a fine calm day and I’m sure it will be an interesting and a fun event for the Mangawhai community and surrounding districts.”

This is what the pilots call a fly-in, where the pilots and crew mix socially with one another and enjoy their time together. It is not an air show although the aircraft will be available for public viewing at close range along with the vintage cars.

Children will be able to be taken for a short drive in the domain as long as they are accompanied by a parent though numbers will be determined by the number of vehicles available.
