Big bucks for fire brigadeMangawhai Fire Brigade number one supporter, Annie Kitchener, and her team, again rallied the community organising a family fun, wine and auction fundraiser held at Millars Vineyard on Anniversary Weekend.
The weather Gods smiled broadly with a keen crowd seeking shade away from the searing mid-afternoon sun. “I couldn’t have been more pleased with the turnout,” said Annie “and the number of lots for both auction and silent auction were of the highest quality, well sought after and every lot sold.” Vendors were to be commended for putting reasonable reserves on their art works for the benefit of the brigade and so every lot sold. Auctioneer Mike McGarry played and cajoled the crowd into opening their wallets wide, the day ending with a donation to the brigade of a little over $13,000. Among the most notable was a pottery column donated by Morris & James Pottery of Matakana, which sold to a local buyer for $960. A great start to the day which set the tone for the auction. “It has taken well over six months to organise,” says Annie “and so many wonderful people have had a part in the organisation, all just through goodwill, so we are pleased it’s over but equally pleased at the acceptance and participation of the community and on behalf of the fire brigade. We really need that new base.” Hosts Ross and Jenny-May Millar of Millars Wines were just as complimentary. “We are proud to be able to provide such a venue that promotes such an atmosphere,” says Ross. “Everyone appeared to have a wonderful time, all for a worthy cause, and we would be pleased to do it again.” -- PHOTOS/Clive Davey Photography |
